Affordable Lilac Centerpiece

With my wedding fast approaching (oh wait, I've got two more years), I have been searching all over for centerpiece inspiration. I tend to be a bit bossy and I'm the first to admit that I am a perfectionist so I will be doing 90% of the decorating (with the help of his wonderful grandmother who has impeccable taste). We are planning on a backyard, evening wedding under his grandparents giant willow tree so I wanted something a little less formal, but I didn't want it to be "that redneck BBQ wedding". I got fed up with searching the web for inspiration and went shopping instead! I came home from Walmart and Michael's with the only two silk flowers I liked and a little bag of supplies worth a meager 30$.

The Vase
Step 1:
First I gathered all of my supplies, turned on some music, and got a nice, tall glass of water. I started out by hot gluing the twine around the vase, starting from the bottom. I learned after the first couple I did that you only need a few dabs of glue on the vase. I was gluing 4x per row of twine but that was overkill, the twine will stay put with 1 dab of hot glue about every fifth row! How high you take the twine is completely up to you, I just liked the way it looked about an inch from the top.

Step 2:
After the twine is glued on and cooled (very important that you let the glue set and cool so you don't move the twine and make it look uneven), measure out how much ribbon you need to go around the vase and glue it in place where you want it. I only put a single piece of ribbon, but I made a few dummies with multiple ribbon strands and it just as cute! Once you have your ribbon on, glue on your button(s) where you want, and viola, the vase portion is finished!

The Arrangement
Once you finish the vase portion of this centerpiece, you can set that aside and work on the flower arrangement. I will admit that I am far from a pro when it comes to floral arranging, but my fiancé's grandmother is amazing so she helped a lot with this!

Step 1:
Gather the flowers you want in your arrangement and cut them to desired length (be careful! I cut myself pretty badly with the wire inside the flowers). I used Walmart brand silk lilacs (7 flowers per stalk) and white carnations (8 flowers per stalk) because I'm extremely picky and these are the only flowers I liked for my wedding!

Step 2:
Once you have the flowers cut to desired length, start sticking them into the floral foam. It's a lot easier to put the flowers into the foam if you put the foam into the vase first! Bend and move the flowers until they are to your liking. Keep stepping back and looking at your masterpiece until it looks perfect!

Not counting the cost of the glue gun or sticks, each of these centerpieces cost about 9$ each. I need 14, so the total cost of centerpieces for my reception will be approximately 126$. That's not a bad price if you ask me! I liked this centerpiece so much I made an extra one for my dining room table, perfect for springtime!
